Bahrain positioned as a leader in gastronomy tourism, says UNWTO expert

Manama, Nov. 20 (BNA): Sandra Carvao, Director of Market Intelligence and Competitiveness at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), commended Bahrain for hosting the first UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism in the Middle East. She described the event as a significant step in positioning Bahrain as a leader in the gastronomy tourism sector. 

“Hosting this event is a strong signal that Bahrain is ready to take its stand as a gastronomy tourism destination,” Carvao told Bahrain News Agency (BNA). “The chefs and stakeholders here are doing magnificent work, showcasing their creativity and dedication to preserving culinary traditions while innovating for modern tastes.” 

Carvao praised Bahraini chefs for integrating local traditions into their gastronomy. “We were very impressed by Bahraini chefs, who highlighted the island’s rich culinary heritage. Chef Tala Bashmi’s statement that ‘fish is our essence’ beautifully reflects the deep connection between Bahrain’s identity and its gastronomy. These chefs are leading the way in combining authenticity with innovation,” she added. 

The 9th UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism highlighted the evolving role of gastronomy tourism as a key driver of authentic experiences, cultural preservation, and sustainability. 

Carvao elaborated on the growing significance of gastronomy tourism in the post-pandemic era, stating that food has become a primary motivation for travellers. “Gastronomy tourism has been growing exponentially as travellers increasingly seek authentic experiences. For many, food is at the heart of travel—whether they plan trips around dining at renowned restaurants or exploring a destination’s culinary offerings.” 

She noted that this trend has elevated the value of gastronomy tourism, with local dishes and ingredients playing a pivotal role in shaping travel experiences. 

Carvao identified three key trends shaping the future of gastronomy tourism: authenticity, wellness, and sustainability.

“Travellers today are eager to discover local dishes and ingredients that tell the story of a destination. At the same time, there is growing interest in how food connects to wellness, both in terms of health and the environment,” she concluded.
